Biografía

Edgar Maddison Welch was a Salisbury, North Carolina resident who became nationally known after entering Comet Ping Pong, a pizza restaurant in Washington, D.C., armed with firearms on December 4, 2016. The incident became one of the earliest high-profile examples of online conspiracy theories leading to real-world violence.

The Comet Ping Pong Incident

December 4, 2016 Welch, then 28 years old, drove from North Carolina to Washington, D.C. and entered Comet Ping Pong carrying an AR-15-style rifle, a revolver, and a folding knife. He stated that he intended to “self-investigate” claims he had encountered online alleging that the restaurant was connected to a child trafficking operation, a false theory that had spread widely on social media platforms in the weeks prior.

Inside the restaurant, Welch fired three shots that struck walls, a desk, and a door. Customers and staff fled the building. After finding no evidence to support the online claims, Welch surrendered peacefully to police officers who had surrounded the restaurant. No one was physically injured.

March 2017 Welch pleaded guilty to a federal charge of interstate transport of firearms and a District of Columbia charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

June 2017 U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson sentenced Welch to four years in federal prison. At sentencing, the judge stated that his actions “literally left psychological wreckage.” Welch expressed remorse in a handwritten letter to the court, calling his actions “foolish” and “reckless.”

2020 Welch was transferred to a community corrections center in March 2020 and subsequently released.

Death

January 2025 During a traffic stop in Kannapolis, North Carolina, police officers attempted to arrest Welch on an outstanding warrant. According to law enforcement accounts, Welch drew a handgun and refused orders to disarm. Two officers fired, and Welch died from his injuries on January 6, 2025.

Significance in Digital Politics

The Comet Ping Pong incident became a widely cited example in discussions about the real-world consequences of online misinformation and conspiracy theories. The event prompted broader public debate about the responsibilities of social media platforms in moderating false claims, and it remains a reference point in discussions about the intersection of internet culture and public safety.
