Heather Danielle Heyer was a paralegal from Ruckersville, Virginia, who was killed on August 12, 2017, when a car was driven into a crowd of counter-protesters during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her death drew national attention to the rally and its aftermath.
Early Life and Career
Heyer grew up in Ruckersville, Virginia, and graduated from William Monroe High School in Stanardsville. She worked as a paralegal in the bankruptcy department of a Charlottesville law firm, where she had been employed for five years. She also attended classes at night to further her knowledge of law.
The Unite the Right Rally
On August 11, 2017, hundreds of participants in the Unite the Right rally marched on the University of Virginia campus carrying torches. After seeing livestreamed footage of the march, Heyer initially decided not to attend the following day’s events due to safety concerns. She later changed her mind, telling a friend she felt compelled to attend in solidarity with those opposing the rally.
On the afternoon of August 12, 2017, James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters on Fourth Street in downtown Charlottesville, approximately half a mile from the rally site. Heyer was killed and 35 others were injured in the attack. She was 32 years old.
Legal Proceedings
Fields was convicted of first-degree murder in a Virginia state court in December 2018. He was also convicted of 29 federal hate crime charges in June 2019 and sentenced to life in prison.
Legacy
In December 2017, the section of Fourth Street in Charlottesville where Heyer was killed was renamed “Heather Heyer Way” in her memory. She received a posthumous Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Social Justice in 2017, with her mother accepting the award on her behalf.
The Heather Heyer Foundation was established to provide scholarships to individuals pursuing studies in law, paralegal studies, social work, and education.
