Biografía

Mallory McMorrow is a Democratic member of the Michigan Senate from the Detroit suburbs. A 2022 floor speech responding to a colleague’s fundraising email, which she posted to Twitter, drew more than 8 million views within a day and brought her national attention. She later ran for the U.S. Senate in 2026 and suspended her campaign before the primary; after a polling firm admitted in October 2026 that it had fabricated its surveys, she said one of its polls had cut off her fundraising.

Background and Election (2018)

McMorrow earned a degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame and worked for more than a decade in product design, media and advertising before entering politics. She was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2018 and won a second term in 2022, representing the 8th district, after which she served as Senate Majority Whip.

The 2022 Floor Speech

In April 2022, after three Democratic senators walked out of a session opened with an invocation delivered by Republican state senator Lana Theis, Theis sent a fundraising email that called McMorrow a social media “troll” and accused her of wanting to “groom” and “sexualize” kindergartners. On 19 April 2022, McMorrow answered in a roughly five-minute speech on the Senate floor, naming Theis and describing herself as “a straight, white, Christian, married, suburban mom” who wanted “every kid to feel seen, heard and supported.”

McMorrow posted the video on Twitter, where it drew more than 8 million views in less than 24 hours. It circulated on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and was shared by Hillary Clinton, political groups including MeidasTouch and The Lincoln Project, and journalists and television hosts.

2026 U.S. Senate Campaign

McMorrow announced a campaign in April 2025 for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Gary Peters, entering a Democratic primary that came to include Representative Haley Stevens and physician Abdul El-Sayed. In April 2026, CNN’s KFile team reported that roughly 6,000 of her older tweets had been deleted, and that while her 2025 memoir said she had “relocated permanently” to Michigan in 2014, she had voted in California’s June 2016 primary. Her campaign said it had deleted her pre-2020 tweets as standard practice and described the move to Michigan as gradual.

On 29 June 2026, the firm Wedgewood Polls released a survey showing McMorrow at 9 percent, behind Stevens and El-Sayed. She suspended her campaign on 5 July 2026 without endorsing either remaining candidate. Michigan Public reported, citing an unnamed source, that outside spending supporting Stevens was the main factor.

The Wedgewood Polls Admission

On 20 October 2026, Wedgewood Polls admitted that its surveys, which national outlets and poll trackers had cited, were fabricated. McMorrow then said that after its poll circulated, donations “dried up” and she was “hounded” with calls to leave the race. She urged people not to trust the polls and called for campaign finance and transparency reforms. The head of a super PAC that supported her said donors had used the poll to pull back funding.
