Patrick J. Deneen is a political scientist and professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he holds the David A. Potenziani Memorial College Chair of Constitutional Studies. He is known for his scholarly work on democracy, liberalism, and American political thought.

Academic Career

Deneen earned a B.A. in English literature from Rutgers University in 1986 and later completed his Ph.D. in political science, with his dissertation receiving the American Political Science Association’s Leo Strauss Award for Best Dissertation in Political Philosophy in 1995.

He served as an assistant professor at Princeton University from 1997 to 2005, then joined Georgetown University as the Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis Associate Professor of Government from 2005 to 2012. He moved to the University of Notre Dame in 2012 and was promoted to full professor in 2018.

Published Works

Deneen’s 2018 book Why Liberalism Failed, published by Yale University Press, examined what he described as structural failures within the liberal political tradition. The book was translated into over twenty languages and was included on former President Barack Obama’s 2018 summer reading list.

His 2023 book Regime Change: Toward a Postliberal Future expanded on these themes, proposing alternative frameworks for governance and political order. He has also authored Democratic Faith (2005) and Conserving America? Essays on Present Discontents (2016).

Public Discourse and Writing

Deneen has contributed to publications including First Things, The American Conservative, The New Atlantis, and Front Porch Republic. He has participated in public debates on topics including corporate social responsibility and the role of institutions in political life.

He publishes a Substack newsletter called Theoria, where he writes on topics related to political philosophy and contemporary governance. He also maintains a presence on Twitter/X, engaging in discussions on political theory and public policy.
