Fictional country invented on 4chan circulates as an online identity marker.
“Kek” began as a rendering of “lol” in World of Warcraft cross-faction chat. 4chan users later connected the word to an Egyptian deity of the same name, depicted with a frog’s head, and to the Pepe frog image already circulating on the board. From this came Kekistan, a fictional country with an invented mythology and a green-and-black banner.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which documents the sequence above, describes the construction as a way to troll political opponents and as a vehicle for what participants called “meme magic,” and notes that the banner’s design mirrors a German war flag. Those are the SPLC’s characterisations and are stated here as theirs.
Dating is imprecise. The banner image circulated on 4chan before 2016 and the term reached wider circulation on other platforms in early 2017, so no single date marks an emergence; this entry carries year-only precision for the intervening period.
