Privacy Policy

Modern Politics respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the safeguards we maintain.

There are no accounts on this site, nothing to sign up for, and no advertising. Two things do collect information, and both are described in full below.

Information We Collect

• Site Analytics — The site loads PostHog, a third-party analytics service, to measure how much the site is read and which pages people reach. It records the page you viewed, how you arrived (the referring site or link), a broad category for the page type, your browser and device type, and a location approximated from your IP address — country and region, not an address. It also records clicks and other interactions with page elements as you browse.

  What it does not do: there is no session recording, so your scrolling, typing, and mouse movement are not replayed. No advertising or cross-site advertising profile is built from it. The data is not sold or shared for marketing.

  PostHog assigns your browser a random identifier and stores it in a cookie and in local storage so that repeat visits are counted as one reader rather than several. That identifier is not tied to a name, an email, or an account, because the site holds none.

  If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, analytics are disabled for your visit and nothing above is collected. Browser-level tracking blockers also stop it. PostHog processes this data on our behalf and is governed by PostHog’s own privacy policy.

• Page Feedback — The feedback button on each page sends the page URL, the category you select, and the description you write. It records nothing else — no name, no email, no account. If you put identifying information in the description, it is stored along with the rest of the report. Reports are filed in the project’s issue tracker, hosted by GitHub and governed by GitHub’s privacy policy. Reports filed this way are public, so do not put anything in one you would not want read by anyone.

How We Use Information

• To respond to correction requests, inquiries, and collaboration offers
• To prioritize which pages get fixed or expanded
• To see which parts of the site are read and which are ignored, which informs what gets written or improved next

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or third parties for marketing purposes.

Data Retention

• Feedback reports are retained as issues in the project’s tracker for as long as they are useful as a record of what was reported and what changed.
• Analytics data is retained by PostHog under its standard retention schedule. It is only ever read in aggregate.

Cookies and Local Storage

• Analytics — PostHog stores a random visitor identifier in a cookie and in local storage, as described above. Do Not Track, or a tracking blocker, prevents it.
• Your preferences — Your choice of light or dark theme, and your language preference, are stored on your device so the site remembers them. They are never sent anywhere.

Your Choices

• Turn on Do Not Track in your browser, or use a tracking blocker, and analytics are not collected.
• Clearing your browser’s cookies and site data for modpol.org removes the analytics identifier and your saved preferences.
• To ask what analytics data is associated with your browser, or to have it deleted, send a request through the feedback button on any page. Because the site holds no name or account, include the visitor identifier if you want a specific record found.
