PragerU

PragerU produces short-form videos on political, economic, historical and cultural subjects. It is operated by the Prager University Foundation, a nonprofit registered in Sherman Oaks, California, whose IRS ruling dates to August 2010.

Despite the name, the organization is not an accredited university and does not confer degrees; its filings classify it under NTEE code B99, education not elsewhere classified.

Funding and Scale

The Foundation’s Form 990 for tax year 2023 reports total revenue of **$68.68 million**, of which$66.56 million was contributions and grants and none was program service revenue, against total functional expenses of $55.42 million and end-of-year assets of$102.02 million. Revenue in 2022 was $65.50 million against expenses of$45.46 million.

Those figures are worth stating plainly, because they are the most concrete fact available about the organization: it is a donor-funded video operation of substantial size, spending more each year than most American newsrooms.

Distribution

PragerU’s video library is carried on DailyWire+, the subscription service operated by The Daily Wire, LLC. The Daily Wire lists PragerU among the properties covered by that service, alongside The Daily Wire itself, The World of Jordan Peterson, Movies and Bentkey — a donor-funded nonprofit’s output distributed through a for-profit subscription platform.

Litigation Against Google

PragerU sued Google over the handling of its videos on YouTube. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on 23 October 2017 as Prager University v. Google LLC, No. 5:17-cv-06064, and went to the Ninth Circuit as No. 18-15712, docketed 24 April 2018. This page records the captions and filing dates only; the outcome is not stated here, because it cannot be read from the docket entries consulted.

Sourcing Note

The founded: 2009 value is corrected to 2010, the date of the Foundation’s IRS ruling; no earlier first-party date could be fetched. The reach line “over 6 billion total video views across platforms” is removed as unsourced — it is the organization’s own claim about itself, and it could not be retrieved from any accessible PragerU page to attribute as such.

Removed as unsourceable: the attribution of the founding to the radio host Dennis Prager; the “five-minute” video format; the claim that videos “often featur[e] university professors and public intellectuals”; the description of its content strategy as using “eye-catching thumbnails, compelling titles, and shareable formats designed for viral distribution”; the claim that it “uses data-driven approaches… analyzing view metrics and engagement to optimize messaging”; the statement that it has “expanded into formal educational settings, creating curricula for schools”; and the account of platform-moderation disputes in which it claims “algorithmic suppression” while “others dispute these claims.”

The platform-moderation dispute is the one claim that could be replaced with a record rather than dropped: the Prager University v. Google LLC dockets are cited above, and the section on litigation states what they show. The school-curriculum question has no equivalent citation here; state board of education proceedings generate public documents and would be the place to start.

The youtube connection, described as PragerU’s “primary platform for video distribution with millions of subscribers,” is removed: the subscriber claim is unsourced and the platform relationship as described adds nothing checkable.
