Biography
Fredrick Robert Brennan was an American software developer and type designer best known for founding the imageboard website 8chan in 2013. Born in Albany, New York, Brennan had osteogenesis imperfecta, a condition commonly known as brittle bone disease, which required him to use a wheelchair throughout his life.
Early Life and Computing
Brennan’s physical condition limited his mobility during childhood, leading him to develop an early interest in computers. He began using his first computer at age six and wrote his first independent program at age thirteen. He became active in internet culture as a teenager, frequenting imageboards including 4chan starting around 2006.
Founding 8chan
In October 2013, Brennan launched 8chan (also called Infinitechan), funding its initial development through pledges on Patreon. The site was designed as a user-driven imageboard where anyone could create and moderate their own discussion boards, distinguishing it from more centrally moderated alternatives. In September 2014, after 4chan restricted discussion of certain topics, 8chan experienced a major surge in traffic, growing from around 100 posts per hour to over 4,000 posts per hour and becoming the second most popular English-language imageboard.
Working with Jim Watkins
Following 8chan’s rapid growth in 2014, Brennan moved to the Philippines to work for Jim Watkins, a U.S. Army veteran and internet entrepreneur who provided hosting services for the site. In 2015, Watkins became the official owner and operator of 8chan. Brennan continued as site administrator until 2016, when he stepped down from the role. In December 2018, Brennan ended his working relationship with the Watkins family entirely.
Criticism of 8chan
After the March 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, where the attacker posted a manifesto to 8chan before carrying out the attack, Brennan publicly stated he no longer wished to be associated with the imageboard world. Following the August 2019 El Paso shooting, in which a suspect also posted a manifesto to the site, Brennan called for 8chan to be shut down entirely. He became one of the most visible voices advocating for the platform’s removal from the internet.
Type Design and Later Work
Beyond his involvement with 8chan, Brennan pursued a career in type design, creating fonts and contributing to open-source typography projects. He advocated for internet safety reforms and spoke publicly about platform responsibility and content moderation challenges.
Digital Politics Impact
Brennan’s trajectory from platform founder to platform critic placed him at the center of several major debates in digital politics:
- The tension between unrestricted online speech and the potential for platforms to facilitate real-world harm
- Questions about platform operator responsibility for user-generated content
- The role of anonymous imageboards in shaping political movements and online radicalization
- Debates over deplatforming as a strategy for addressing harmful online communities
Brennan died on January 10, 2026, at the age of 31.
