Biography

Kalle Lasn is an Estonian-Canadian filmmaker, author, and activist who founded Adbusters magazine in 1989. Through Adbusters and its associated media campaigns, Lasn became a central figure in connecting culture jamming and media criticism with digitally organized political action in the United States.

Adbusters and Culture Jamming

1989-2010 Lasn co-founded Adbusters magazine in Vancouver, Canada, as a platform for critiquing consumer culture and mass media. The magazine promoted “culture jamming,” a practice of subverting mainstream media messages through parody and counter-advertising. Adbusters organized campaigns such as Buy Nothing Day and TV Turnoff Week, which gained attention in the United States and internationally as forms of media-based activism.

Lasn authored Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America in 1999, articulating a framework for using media tactics to challenge corporate influence on public discourse. The book and magazine built an audience that would later become a base for digital political organizing.

Launching Occupy Wall Street

2011 In June 2011, Adbusters published a blog post and a poster featuring a ballerina atop the Wall Street charging bull sculpture, calling for people to flood lower Manhattan on September 17, 2011. The magazine proposed a peaceful occupation modeled on the Arab Spring protests, with the demand that participants establish a single grievance against the influence of money in politics.

Adbusters registered the hashtag #OccupyWallStreet and promoted it through email lists and social media, creating one of the earliest instances of a print publication using digital tools to launch a major street protest in the United States. The call spread through Twitter, Tumblr, and other platforms, ultimately drawing thousands of protesters to Zuccotti Park in New York City.

Post-Occupy Activity

2012-Present Following the Occupy encampments, Lasn continued to use Adbusters as a platform for media criticism and political commentary. The magazine maintained its focus on the intersection of media, consumer culture, and political power, while incorporating digital distribution alongside its print edition.

Lasn continued publishing and speaking about the role of media in shaping political consciousness, advocating for what he describes as mental environmentalism — the idea that the media environment affects public thought in ways comparable to how the physical environment affects public health.

Digital Political Impact

Kalle Lasn’s influence on digital politics includes:

  • Originating the #OccupyWallStreet hashtag and call to action that launched one of the most significant digitally organized protest movements in the United States
  • Demonstrating how a print publication could use digital tools to mobilize mass physical protest
  • Bridging culture jamming and anti-corporate media criticism with social media organizing tactics
  • Providing an early model for how established media outlets could leverage hashtags and email lists to catalyze street-level political action
  • Influencing subsequent movements that adopted similar digital-to-physical organizing strategies

Media Strategy

  • Combined print magazine distribution with digital outreach through email newsletters and social media
  • Used visual imagery and concise messaging designed for viral sharing across platforms
  • Leveraged existing readership as an organizing base that could amplify calls to action online

Lasn’s role in launching Occupy Wall Street demonstrated the potential for media organizations to serve as catalysts for digitally coordinated political movements, establishing a model that influenced subsequent organizing efforts across the political spectrum.
