Context
Political hashtags on Twitter have served as both organizing tools and barometers of public attention since the early 2010s. The #BlackLivesMatter hashtag, created in July 2013, became the most prominent example of hashtag-driven political mobilization over the following decade, with usage closely tied to specific incidents of police violence. Its peak single-day volume of over 1.2 million tweets during the George Floyd protests in May 2020 dwarfed all other political hashtags tracked by Pew Research Center.
The #MAGA hashtag demonstrated a different pattern of sustained, high-volume daily usage rather than event-driven spikes. From Election Day 2016 through May 2018, it averaged over 205,000 tweets per day, making it the most consistently used political hashtag during that period. The #MeToo hashtag showed the most rapid viral launch of any in this dataset, exceeding 500,000 uses within its first 24 hours in October 2017 before settling to an average of roughly 62,000 daily tweets over the following months.
The #StopTheSteal hashtag, which emerged on November 3, 2020 and was removed by Twitter on January 7, 2021, represents a case where comprehensive volume data was not preserved. The hashtag's brief but intense lifespan—roughly 65 days—makes it difficult to compare directly with the longer-running hashtags in this dataset. Cross-platform engagement data from BuzzSumo showed over 70 million engagements with "Stop the Steal" content across platforms between September 2020 and February 2021, with over 43.5 million of those occurring in December 2020 alone.
