Craigslist began in 1995 as an email list Craig Newmark used to share San Francisco events with friends. It moved to a majordomo list server and then to www.craigslist.org, broadening from events into jobs, items for sale and apartments. Newmark decided at the end of 1997 to keep the site non-commercial and went full-time on it in early 1999.
Peer-reviewed research on craigslist’s entry into local markets found that newspapers more dependent on classified advertising experienced larger declines in classified-ad rates, together with higher subscription prices, falling circulation and lower display-ad rates.
