Biography

Jacob Chansley, also known as Jake Angeli, gained widespread recognition as one of the most visible participants in the January 6, 2021 Capitol breach, where he appeared wearing a fur headdress with horns and face paint. He had previously been active in the QAnon movement, attending rallies and protests primarily in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

Early Background

2005-2007 Chansley enlisted in the United States Navy in September 2005 and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. He was processed out of the Navy in October 2007 after approximately two years of service, holding the rank of Storekeeper Seaman Apprentice.

2010s Prior to gaining national attention, Chansley attended Moon Valley High School and Glendale Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, where he studied psychology, religion, philosophy, and ceramics. He became involved in conspiracy theory communities and adopted the persona “QAnon Shaman,” attending QAnon rallies and political demonstrations in the Phoenix area.

QAnon Activism and Online Presence

2019-2020 Chansley became a recognizable figure at political rallies in Arizona, regularly appearing in his distinctive costume featuring a fur headdress with horns, face paint, and an American flag. He attended multiple political events and protests, building a following among QAnon supporters.

In late 2020, he produced and narrated a series of videos espousing conspiracy theories, uploading them to the platform Rumble. His social media activity expanded as he promoted QAnon narratives and attended rallies related to the 2020 presidential election results.

January 6, 2021 Capitol Breach

January 2021 Chansley was among those who entered the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Photographs and video of him inside the Senate chamber in his distinctive costume became some of the most widely circulated images of the event. He was arrested on January 9, 2021.

2021-2023 On September 3, 2021, Chansley pleaded guilty to a single count of obstructing an official proceeding. On November 17, 2021, he was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison.

In March 2023, Chansley was released from prison approximately 14 months early and transferred to a halfway house, having served a portion of his sentence.

Post-Release Political Activity

2023-2024 Following his release, Chansley filed a candidate statement of interest in November 2023 to run for Arizona’s 8th congressional district as a Libertarian in the 2024 election. He did not ultimately submit petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.

2025-Present In January 2025, Chansley was among approximately 1,500 individuals pardoned by President Donald Trump for charges connected to the January 6 Capitol breach. He subsequently announced plans to run for Governor of Arizona as an independent candidate.
