The source for the sequence stated in this entry: Sidarth telephoned the Webb campaign within hours on the Friday; the campaign held the footage over the weekend rather than posting it; it tipped off a Washington Post reporter, who was initially unsure the material was news; and it put the video on YouTube only after the Post had published a short story online. Webb campaign manager Jessica Vanden Berg gives this account on the record and explicitly rejects the version in which the campaign 'just threw macaca on YouTube and it just blew up.' Salon's own characterizations — that the video spread 'like a sickness' and that Allen's loss 'handed Democrats control of the Senate' — are that publication's and are not adopted here; Scherer notes in the same article that voters that year were weighing Iraq, congressional corruption and the president's standing.
