ABC

ABC is a broadcast television network. Disney reports the ABC Television Network within its Entertainment segment, among domestic linear networks alongside the Disney, Freeform, FX and National Geographic channels.

Distribution

Disney states that the ABC Network distributes programming to approximately 245 local affiliated television stations and to Disney’s eight owned television stations, which “collectively reach almost 100% of U.S. television households.” Programming runs across five dayparts — primetime, daytime, late night, news and sports — with ESPN programming the sports daypart under the “ESPN on ABC” branding.

Regulatory Position

Broadcast licensing gives the network a legal exposure that cable and streaming services do not have. Disney’s owned ABC stations have historically elected retransmission-consent status under FCC rules, meaning distributors must negotiate for the right to carry their signals rather than being required to carry them.

On 18 August 2026 American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., The Walt Disney Company and the eight ABC-owned station licensees filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the Federal Communications Commission and commissioners Brendan T. Carr, Olivia Trusty and Anna M. Gomez, together with the Media Action Center and Frequency Forward — American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. v. Federal Communications Commission, No. 1:26-cv-02902, assigned to Judge Loren L. AliKhan and pleaded as a federal-question civil rights action. The docket was open as of 1 September 2026 and its substance is not characterized here.

Sourcing Note

The founded: 1943 value and the reach line “5-6 million nightly news viewers” are removed; no fetchable source supports either, and Disney’s filings give neither. The statement that Disney has owned ABC “since 1996” is likewise removed.
