About ABC News
ABC News is the news division of the ABC Television Network. Disney reports the ABC Network within its Entertainment segment, among domestic linear networks alongside the Disney, Freeform, FX and National Geographic channels.
Distribution
Disney states that the ABC Network distributes programming to approximately 245 local affiliated television stations and to the eight television stations Disney itself owns, which “collectively reach almost 100% of U.S. television households.” News is one of the network’s five programming dayparts, alongside primetime, daytime, late night and sports. Disney’s owned ABC stations have historically elected retransmission-consent status under FCC rules rather than must-carry, meaning distributors must negotiate for the right to carry their signals.
Sourcing Note
Most of the previous version of this page has been removed. Disney’s filings describe the ABC Network, not the news division’s operations, and no first-party ABC News page could be fetched (abcnews.go.com serves its site but the about pages linked from it return HTTP 404).
Removed as unsourceable: the founded: 1945 value; the reach line “8-10 million nightly viewers”; the programme inventory (World News Tonight, Good Morning America, Nightline, ABC News Studios, the “Start Here” and “Powerhouse Politics” podcasts); the claim that ABC News Live is a “free, ad-supported streaming channel available on… Roku, Hulu, and ABC apps”; the employs connection to George Stephanopoulos as “chief anchor and political correspondent”; and four sections asserting that the division “plays [a] significant role in shaping political discourse,” “secures high-profile political interviews,” “breaks political scandals,” produces “defining campaign moments,” and faces conflicts between “Disney’s business interests and news coverage obligations.” That last section also carried an unattributed claim that the division “faces criticism from various political factions about perceived bias” — the kind of construction this project does not publish without naming the critic and the claim.
