C-SPAN

C-SPAN is a public-affairs television service carrying unedited coverage of U.S. House and Senate proceedings, hearings, briefings and public policy events. It is operated by the National Cable Satellite Corporation, a nonprofit registered in Washington, D.C. at 400 North Capitol Street NW, which received its IRS ruling in March 1983 and is classified under NTEE code A300, media and communications.

The corporation’s Form 990 for the tax year ending March 2023 reports total revenue of $49.4 million, total functional expenses of$44.2 million, and end-of-year assets of $251.3 million. Of that revenue,$45.7 million is reported as program service revenue and $4.1 million as investment income; the return records no contributions or grants.

Two claims from the previous version are therefore removed: the founded: 1979 value, and the description of C-SPAN as “publicly funded.” The second is contradicted by the filing cited above, which reports essentially all of the corporation’s revenue as program service revenue and investment income, and no contributions or grants at all. What that program service revenue consists of is not stated on the accessible parts of the return, so this page does not describe C-SPAN’s funding arrangements beyond what the figures show.
