About Recode
Recode was a technology news brand. It no longer publishes separately: vox.com/recode redirects to vox.com/technology, and the former standalone domain recode.net returned an HTTP 500 error when checked on 1 September 2026. The Code Conference domain, codeconference.com, is no longer a conference site either: as of 2 September 2026 it serves a redirect to a GoDaddy for-sale lander. Nothing carrying the Recode name still operates under its own domain.
Sourcing Note
The page’s description and digitalPresence were stale and have been corrected: they described Recode as an operating brand with its own site at recode.net.
Removed as unsourceable: the founded: 2014 value; the founding attribution to Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg and the account of Swisher leaving AllThingsD; the statement that “Vox Media acquired Recode in 2015”; the 2022 date given for the brand’s merger into Vox.com; the reach line; the editorial-model description (antitrust, labour practices, privacy regulation coverage; “insider access with skepticism”); the named podcast Recode Decode; and the claims that its reporting “has broken stories about content moderation decisions, platform lobbying, and regulatory investigations” and that it “played a formative role in making technology accountability a central topic in modern political discourse.”
The kara-swisher connection is removed with them: the slug does not resolve to a page in this knowledge base and the description was unsourced.
This page is a candidate for merging into vox. Its subject is a retired brand whose only surviving asset is a conference; what it can now say is a redirect. Whether it should remain as a separate entry is a scope decision, recorded in reports/citations/media.md.

Vox Media. vox.com/recode — redirect to vox.com/technology. Checked directly: the Recode path on vox.com issues a redirect to vox.com/technology, which is the evidence that the brand no longer has a separate home. The former standalone domain recode.net returned HTTP 500 at the same check.

Code Conference. **No longer a conference site.** Re-checked 2 September 2026: the domain returns HTTP 200, but the payload is a 114-byte page whose only content is a script redirecting to `/lander`, which in turn resolves to `forsale.godaddy.com/forsale/www.codeconference.com`. The domain is parked for sale. This citation previously described it as 'the conference site, which resolves and is the only Recode-associated property still operating under its own name'; that is no longer true, and the HTTP 200 is why a status-code check would not have caught it. **No archiveUrl is recorded deliberately.** `modpol lint --check citation-urls` offers the capture at `web.archive.org/web/20250711054208/http://codeconference.com/`, but that capture was fetched and read: it is 1,752 bytes carrying a single character of text — the lander again, not the conference site. There is nothing to link to.
