Vox

Vox is an explanatory news site published by Vox Media, Inc. Its own about page states its purpose as addressing a world with “too much noise and too little context,” and describes its method: “We do the work — sift through information, read the studies, talk to experts, and gather a range of perspectives.”

Editorial Approach

Vox states explicitly that it does not compete on speed — “we’re not obsessed with being the first to break the news; we’re focused on being helpful to you” — and that its journalism is “written and produced to be accessible to all, whether you’re a subject-matter expert or hearing about something for the very first time.” It says it reports “on the most important stories shaping our world, but also on issues the rest of the media neglects,” and offers “ideas and solutions” alongside problems.

Its published subject list spans politics, policy, culture, democracy, animal welfare, biodiversity, artificial intelligence and the climate crisis, in articles, videos and podcasts. It sells memberships.

Sourcing Note

The founded: 2014 value is removed: the about page gives no founding date and no other first-party source for one could be fetched. The reach line “25 million monthly website visitors” is removed as unsourced. (BuzzFeed’s Form 10-K names Vox Media as a competitor for audience-time measurement, but publishes no figure for it.)

Also removed as unsourceable: the description of a “card-style explainer” format; the claim that “editorial choices in story selection and framing reflect particular perspectives on policy priorities”; the assertions that its explainer format “has influenced how other outlets present complex policy issues” and that it “pioneered data visualization and interactive content for political topics.” The youtube connection is removed — Vox’s own page confirms it publishes video, which the digitalPresence field already records, and the connection asserted nothing further that was sourced.
