FreedomWorks

FreedomWorks was an advocacy organization that, by its own account, “was originally founded as Citizens for a Sound Economy in 1984.” The IRS record agrees: its 501(c)(4) entity, FreedomWorks Inc (EIN 52-1349353), carries a ruling date of August 1984, and the 501(c)(3) FreedomWorks Foundation (EIN 52-1526916) one of March 1989 — the entities were renamed rather than newly registered when the FreedomWorks name was adopted. Its archived site claimed six million grassroots activists.

Status

No shutdown announcement was located during this pass; the evidence for the organization’s status is documentary. Its website, freedomworks.org, does not resolve for a live request as of August 2026. The Internet Archive’s capture index shows the site serving content through 1 July 2024, returning HTTP 301 redirects from August to October 2024, and returning HTTP 404 continuously from December 2024 onward. Both IRS entities still show filings for the 2023 tax year — FreedomWorks Inc reporting $2.9 million in revenue and$9.8 million in assets, the Foundation $4.6 million in revenue — so the last filed year precedes the site’s disappearance.

What the site contained

The final substantive capture shows an organization structured around four issue areas — economy and free markets, educational freedom, government spending, and rule of law — with an Action Center, a congressional scorecard, video and op-ed sections, and a separately branded FreedomWorks Foundation.

Relevance to digital political discourse

FreedomWorks’ public-facing tools were the standard kit of 2010s online advocacy: an email list, an action centre for contacting legislators, and a legislative scorecard published as a permanent web resource. Its disappearance is itself a data point about the durability of that material — an organization’s entire published record can leave the live web while its tax filings remain on file.
