Hamas is a Palestinian organization active in the Gaza Strip. The U.S. Department of State’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations records HAMAS with a designation date of 8 October 1997.

Scope of this entry

This knowledge base covers American political discourse and media. Hamas appears in it only because its 7 October 2023 attack on Israel and the ensuing war became a dominant subject of American online political argument — the subject of platform moderation disputes, campus protest coverage, and advocacy campaigns documented elsewhere in this collection. The organization itself is not a participant in American digital political discourse, and this page does not attempt a general account of its history, governance or military activity, which fall outside the scope of this project.
