Indivisible

Indivisible was founded in 2016 by former congressional staffers who, in the organization’s words, “saw, from the inside, how grassroots pressure can shape political outcomes.” It reports 2,500 Indivisible groups organizing across the country.

The Indivisible Guide

The organization’s origin is a document rather than an institution: “Indivisible began with a Google Doc on strategic resistance to the Trump agenda.” The guide set out tactics drawn from its authors’ experience of how constituent pressure reaches members of Congress. Indivisible states that it updates the guide after every election “with new tactics to fit the times,” and publishes it alongside a candidate guide.

Structure

Indivisible.org is a joint site of three separate organizations:

• Indivisible Project — a 501(c)(4) (EIN 81-4944067, IRS ruling January 2018), which reported FY2023 revenue of $12.6 million.
• Indivisible Civics — a 501(c)(3) that “provides movement coordination, resources, training, and tools” to the network of groups.
• Indivisible Action — a hybrid political action committee.

Relevance to digital political discourse

Indivisible is a documented case of a shared online document becoming the organizing artifact that a national organization was then built around: the guide circulated first, the groups formed from it, and the legal entities followed. Its ongoing infrastructure is correspondingly web-based — a group directory, group registration, event registration and a set of tech tools offered to local chapters.
