Ludwig von Mises Institute

The Mises Institute — legally the Ludwig von Mises Institute for Austrian Economics, Inc. — is a nonprofit at 518 West Magnolia Avenue in Auburn, Alabama. Its IRS ruling date is September 1982 (EIN 52-1263436). For the 2023 tax year it reported total revenue of $8.5 million and total assets of$54.7 million.

Stated mission

The Institute states that it “exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.” It describes itself as “non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC,” advocating “a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order,” and says it opposes efforts to compromise those ideas with “fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines.”

Its stated methodological position is explicit: its scholarly work is “founded in Misesian praxeology,” which it defines as “a deductive science of human action based on premises known with certainty to be true,” and stands “in self-conscious opposition to the mathematical modeling and hypothesis-testing” of neoclassical economics.

The Institute publishes what it calls “the complete Austrian canon” — books, journal articles and periodicals — free online, alongside curated reading paths, video series, podcasts and an online academy.
