Moms for Liberty is a 501(c)(4) organization registered in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. Its IRS ruling date is June 2022 (EIN 85-4331724); for the 2023 tax year it reported total revenue of 0.85 million. A separate 501(c)(3), the Moms for Liberty Foundation (EIN 87-3980061), files its own return.
Founding
By the organization’s own account, Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice — both former school board members — established Moms for Liberty in 2021 after concluding that parental authority over children’s upbringing was under threat. Descovich designed the logo, launched the website and bought a box of t-shirts for resale on an initial investment of $500. The first two chapters were founded in January in the founders’ home counties in Florida, run by Jennifer Pippin in Indian River County and Ashley Hall in Brevard County, both of whom were already organizing parents against COVID-era restrictions on students. Within two weeks, Barbara Abboud in Nassau County, New York and Jen Fold in Anne Arundel County, Maryland started the first chapters outside Florida.
Stated mission
The organization states that it is “dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government.”
Relevance to digital political discourse
By its own account the organization grew by recruiting existing local organizers — the first chapter heads were already mobilizing parents against COVID-era school restrictions — and crossed state lines within two weeks of launch. It maintains a national site with a chapter directory alongside accounts on the major social platforms.
