The Young Republican National Federation is the national association for Republican club members aged 18 to 40. By its own history, the first Young Republican Club was established in 1856 βin support of the newly formed Republican Party and the abolitionist movement,β the Young Republicans were organised nationally in 1931, and in 1935 the Young Republican division of the Republican Party formally became the YRNF, electing George H. Olmsted β a West Point graduate who had been asked by President Herbert Hoover to head the division β as its first chairman.
Stated mission
The federation states that its mission is βto recruit new Young Republicans and engage young voters with the Republican Party, train the future leaders of the United States, and elect Republican candidates from the top to the bottom of the ballot across the country,β and describes its vision as βto empower young conservatives to recruit, train, and elect leaders.β It charters state organizations, runs deployments and events, and maintains a job board.
The 2025 Telegram leak
On 14 October 2025, Politico published messages from a Telegram group called βRESTOREYR WAR ROOM,β named for Restore YR, a slate within the Young Republicans. Peter Giunta, the former chair of the New York State Young Republicans, said he created the group to rally support for his campaign to become chair of the YRNF. The chat spanned 2,900 pages of messages sent between early January and mid-August 2025 and included participants from Young Republican organizations in several states. Reporting on the contents drew condemnation from both parties; participants faced pressure to resign from Republican organizations and some lost jobs with elected officials.
Relevance to digital political discourse
The episode is a documented case of a national leadership race being organised through a private encrypted group chat, and of that chat becoming the story when its contents were leaked. The tool chosen for internal coordination β Telegram, which participants evidently treated as private β turned out to produce a durable, quotable record.
