Abigail Thorn

Abigail Thorn is a British creator and the host of Philosophy Tube, a YouTube channel producing long-form video essays that apply philosophical frameworks to political and social topics. She also writes for and performs on stage. The channel is known for a theatrical production style — sets, costumes and characters rather than lecture delivery. Thorn is based in the United Kingdom; her presence on this site is as one of the creators grouped under the “BreadTube” label in the scholarly literature, not as a participant in American politics.

The Channel

The Philosophy Tube channel was created on 31 May 2013. Kuznetsov and Ismangil record the creator’s stated motivation: after austerity in the UK education system, to “give away [his] MA in Philosophy free to people who don’t have the opportunities for learning [he has] had,” and to “get people in a position where they can take cutting edge academia and apply it to the real world.” (The paper predates Thorn coming out and uses masculine pronouns throughout.)

BreadTube and the Video-Essay Format

Kuznetsov and Ismangil’s 2020 study treats Philosophy Tube as one of four channels central to what its participants call BreadTube, alongside ContraPoints, Shaun and Hbomberguy — selected as the largest channels whose videos are frequently discussed in those communities. They classify BreadTube output into “response” videos, which rebut a specific talking point, and “explanatory” videos, which introduce a larger theme; Philosophy Tube and ContraPoints exemplify the second. Videos the authors name include “Reform or Revolution”, “Witchcraft, Gender, & Marxism”, “Elon Musk” and “Climate Grief”.

Their analysis of “Climate Grief” describes the production method: Thorn speaks directly to the viewer in the guise of different personas — in that video a futuristic priest delivering a eulogy at a “funeral for planet earth”, and a recurring “travelling salesman” character — and builds arguments on cited published work. Production is funded through Patreon, with videos free to watch and paying supporters contributing directly rather than through advertising.

Coming Out

On 30 January 2021, Thorn came out publicly as a trans woman, in a written statement and a video: “I’m delighted to say I’m a trans woman; my name is Abigail and you can refer to me with she/her pronouns.” PinkNews reported the channel as having approximately 843,000 subscribers at that point. As of 1 September 2026 YouTube displayed 1.67 million.

Theatre

Thorn wrote and performed in The Prince, her first play, which had its world premiere at Southwark Playhouse Borough in London from 15 September to 8 October 2022. The play places characters from Shakespeare inside a multiverse of his works.
