Biography
Cenk Uygur is a political commentator and media entrepreneur who founded The Young Turks (TYT), one of the first major online political news programs. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Uygur immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in New Jersey before attending the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia Law School.
Early Media Career
Legal and Broadcasting Background (1990s-2002) After working as an attorney in Washington, D.C., and New York, Uygur transitioned into media. He hosted talk radio programs and appeared as a commentator on cable news networks, gaining experience in political discussion formats before launching his own platform.
Founding The Young Turks (2002) Uygur created The Young Turks as a talk radio program in 2002. The show initially aired on Sirius Satellite Radio, establishing the format and voice that would later translate to online video.
Pioneering Online Political News
YouTube Launch (2005-2010) In 2005, Uygur began uploading TYT content to YouTube, making it one of the earliest political news programs to adopt the platform for regular video distribution. The show’s daily format and panel discussion style attracted a growing audience of viewers seeking alternatives to traditional cable news.
MSNBC and Return to Independent Media (2011) In 2011, Uygur briefly hosted a weeknight program on MSNBC. He departed the network after several months and returned to building TYT as an independent online operation, framing the move as a choice to maintain editorial independence.
Network Expansion (2012-Present) TYT expanded from a single show into a network of programs with multiple hosts and formats. The operation grew to include live daily broadcasts, clip channels, and content distributed across YouTube, TikTok, and streaming platforms. TYT accumulated over 29 billion lifetime views and became one of the longest-running programs in internet history.
Political Involvement
Justice Democrats (2017) In January 2017, Uygur co-founded Justice Democrats alongside Kyle Kulinski and others. The organization focused on recruiting and supporting candidates in Democratic primary elections. Uygur departed the organization later that year.
Congressional Campaign (2019-2020) Uygur ran for Congress in California’s 25th congressional district in 2020, competing in both the special election and the regular primary. The campaign was unsuccessful, but it marked a direct entry into electoral politics.
Presidential Campaign (2023-2024) In October 2023, Uygur announced a campaign for the 2024 Democratic presidential primary. As a naturalized citizen, he faced constitutional eligibility challenges and appeared on a limited number of state ballots. He suspended the campaign in March 2024.
