Biography

Destiny is the online name of Steven Bonnell II, a streamer who moved from competitive gaming to live political debate, making debate itself the product on a streaming platform.

From StarCraft to Politics

Bonnell built his initial audience streaming StarCraft II, first on Justin.tv and later on Twitch, and established Destiny.gg as an independent community site. From around the 2016 election cycle he increasingly gave the streams over to political argument, developing a format of long, unscripted, adversarial debate conducted live with an audience in chat.

The JonTron Debate

The exchange that carried the format beyond his existing audience was his March 2017 debate with the gaming YouTuber Jon Jafari, known as JonTron, on immigration and race. TIME covered the reaction to Jafari’s statements in the debate. Clips of it circulated well beyond either participant’s channel.

Independent Infrastructure

Destiny.gg is a site Bonnell controls, running outside the moderation policies of Twitch and YouTube, and it is now also his commercial channel: the site sells tickets to in-person and livestreamed debates against named opponents and takes subscriptions and donations directly.

This is the pattern the site tracks under platform independence. Bonnell no longer streams on Twitch under a partnership; the specific circumstances of that change, including any enforcement actions, their dates, and the policies invoked, are not sourced on this page and are not detailed here. What is documented is where the work now lives — on infrastructure he owns.
