Biography
Hila Klein (born Hila Hacmon) is an Israeli-American YouTube creator, podcast co-host, and fashion designer. She co-founded the h3h3Productions YouTube channel with her husband Ethan Klein and serves as CEO of the streetwear brand Teddy Fresh.
Early Life and Background
Hila Hacmon was born on December 12, 1987, in Tel Aviv, Israel, and grew up in Holon. After completing high school, she served in the Israel Defense Forces as part of Israel’s mandatory military service. During her service, she met Ethan Klein in 2007 at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem.
Following her military service, Hila enrolled at Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art in Ramat Gan, Israel, where she studied visual arts. Several of the couple’s earliest video projects originated as school assignments during her time at Shenkar.
h3h3Productions
On April 29, 2011, Hila and Ethan launched the h3h3Productions YouTube channel. Regular content production began in earnest in early 2013, with their first substantial upload on March 13, 2013. The channel became known for reaction videos featuring clips from other content interspersed with comedic commentary and sketch segments. While Ethan typically served as the on-camera personality and narrator, Hila handled much of the production work including camerawork, editing, and set organization.
The channel grew rapidly through the mid-2010s, becoming one of the most recognized names in YouTube commentary culture. Their content focused on satirizing internet culture, critiquing viral videos, and highlighting unusual online content.
Fair Use Lawsuit
In April 2016, YouTuber Matt Hosseinzadeh filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Ethan and Hila Klein after they created a reaction video commenting on one of his videos. The case became a closely watched test of fair use principles on YouTube. In August 2017, Judge Katherine B. Forrest ruled in favor of the Kleins, finding that their reaction video constituted fair use as a matter of law. The ruling noted that the Klein video was “decidedly not a market substitute” for the original and constituted “critical commentary.” The case established legal precedent for fair use in the context of YouTube reaction and commentary videos, and the broader creator community rallied around the Kleins during the proceedings, contributing over $145,000 to their legal defense fund.
H3 Podcast
In late 2016, the Kleins began producing a podcast, with their first episode featuring Justin Roiland uploaded on December 20, 2016. The dedicated H3 Podcast channel launched on April 7, 2017. Hila serves as co-host alongside Ethan, participating in long-form discussions covering internet culture, current events, and interviews with public figures. The podcast expanded into multiple weekly shows and became one of YouTube’s prominent live-streamed programs.
Teddy Fresh
In 2017, Hila founded Teddy Fresh, a Los Angeles-based streetwear brand. Drawing on her visual arts background, she serves as CEO and principal designer. The brand is known for its colorful, playful designs featuring pastel and color-block patterns inspired by children’s clothing and 1990s fashion. Teddy Fresh expanded from an initial small batch of unisex hoodies and shirts into a full apparel line including accessories and collaborations with brands such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Care Bears, and Looney Tunes. The brand secured retail distribution through Zumiez stores nationwide in 2018 and has been worn by notable public figures.
Broader Influence
Hila Klein became a naturalized United States citizen in 2019. Through h3h3Productions, the H3 Podcast, and Teddy Fresh, she has played a significant role in the development of YouTube commentary culture and the creator economy, contributing to discussions around fair use, content creation, and the intersection of digital media with fashion entrepreneurship.
