Biography
Ilhan Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which covers Minneapolis and its surrounding suburbs. She was sworn in in January 2019.
Firsts
Her office’s own description records three: the first African refugee to become a member of Congress, the first woman of colour to represent Minnesota, and — with Rashida Tlaib — one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress.
Before Congress she worked in the Twin Cities as a policy analyst, organizer, public speaker and advocate.
