Jason Koebler is a technology journalist who co-founded 404 Media in 2023 after leading Motherboard, Vice Media’s technology ve rtical. He directs the newsroom’s editorial strategy with a focus on how digital infrastructure, labor, and surveillance policie s intersect with public life.
Motherboard Leadership
Koebler joined Vice Media in 2013 and rose to editor-in-chief of Motherboard, where he oversaw investigative reporting on hackin g, infrastructure failures, and emerging technology policy. His team published documents on law enforcement surveillance tools, covered the gig economy’s labor practices, and highlighted vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.
Launching 404 Media
In 2023 Koebler and a core group of Motherboard colleagues exited Vice amid the company’s bankruptcy and layoffs to establish 40 4 Media as a journalist-owned newsroom. He built custom publishing systems, crafted the outlet’s membership model, and maintaine d an editorial commitment to publishing primary documents alongside investigations.
