Biography
Joan Blades is a co-founder of MoveOn.org, one of the first major online political organizations in the United States, and a pioneer of digital political organizing.
Early Career and MoveOn.org
Founding MoveOn.org (1998) Joan Blades and her husband Wes Boyd, both software entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, launched MoveOn.org in September 1998 during the Clinton impeachment proceedings. The site began as a simple online petition asking Congress to “censure President Clinton and move on to pressing issues facing the nation.” Within days, hundreds of thousands of people had signed the petition, demonstrating the untapped potential of internet-based political organizing.
Building the Digital Organizing Model (1998-2004) MoveOn.org grew into one of the most influential online political organizations in the country. Under Blades and Boyd’s leadership, the organization pioneered several innovations in digital politics: large-scale email list organizing, small-dollar online fundraising, and rapid-response mobilization around political events. These techniques became foundational to modern digital political campaigns across the political spectrum.
MomsRising
Co-founding MomsRising (2006) Blades co-founded MomsRising, a digital advocacy organization focused on family economic security, healthcare, education, and related policy areas. The organization applied many of the digital organizing techniques developed at MoveOn to mobilize parents around family-focused policy issues, building a membership of over a million through online campaigns, social media organizing, and email-driven advocacy.

Joan Blades’s influence on digital politics includes:

- Pioneering rapid-response digital organizing around breaking political developments
