JonTron

Jon Jafari, who publishes as JonTron, is an American video creator whose YouTube channel carries comedic reviews of video games, films and consumer products. A livestreamed debate on immigration in March 2017 drew mainstream press coverage and led a British game studio to remove his recorded voice work from a game.

YouTube Channel

The JonTronShow channel was created on 31 August 2010. As of 1 September 2026 it listed 146 videos, 1,426,165,300 total views and 6.38 million subscribers, with its most recent upload — “Animorphs: The TV Show” — published on 11 January 2025.

Game Grumps

Jafari appeared alongside Arin Hanson on Game Grumps, a video game commentary channel created on 10 July 2012. The earliest episode located, “Kirby Super Star - Spring Breeze ADVENTURES!”, was published on 18 July 2012 and features both. The channel published a video titled “Ode to Jon” on 25 June 2013; its video descriptions since list its hosts as Hanson and Danny Avidan.

March 2017 Debate and Its Consequences

On 13 March 2017 a roughly two-hour debate between Jafari and Steven Bonnell, who streams under the name Destiny, was published to Bonnell’s YouTube channel under the title “Debating JonTron”, described there as “primarily discussing immigration and assimilation.”

TIME reported the following day that during the exchange Jafari repeatedly raised concerns about declining white populations in the United States, said that minorities were “turning everyone against each other”, and suggested that immigration could be acceptable if immigrants “assimilated, they would enter the gene pool, eventually.” The magazine also reported that he had tweeted in support of Representative Steve King’s statement about “restoring civilization”, that viewers expressed disappointment, and that other creators associated with NormalBoots reported harassment and subscriber losses. Jafari declined to comment to TIME.

On 23 March 2017 the studio Playtonic Games removed Jafari’s voice contribution from its game Yooka-Laylee. Its statement read in part:

JonTron is a talented video presenter who we were initially, two years ago, happy to include as a voice contributor in our game. However, in light of his recent personal viewpoints we have made the decision to remove JonTron’s inclusion in the game via a forthcoming content update. We would like to make absolutely clear that we do not endorse or support JonTron’s personal viewpoints and that, as an external fan contributor, he does not represent Playtonic in any capacity.

Jafari released a video responding to the coverage, in which he said his comments had been misconstrued. Speaking on the H3 Podcast later in 2017 he said, “Yeah, I could’ve phrased a lot of that better.” The response video is no longer published on his channel.

He continued to publish entertainment videos on JonTronShow after 2017; the channel remained active into 2025.

What Is Not Established Here

Removed for want of a source that met this project’s standard:

• Birth year. The page asserted 1990. No source that this pass could fetch and read establishes it, so the birthYear field has been removed rather than carried forward on a wiki’s authority.
• The Twitch claim. The page stated that the debate took place on Twitch and listed Twitch among his primary platforms. The recording was published to YouTube and its description points viewers to destiny.gg; nothing located places the exchange on Twitch. Twitch and Twitter/X have been removed from primaryPlatforms and from connections.
• Subscriber milestones. “Surpassed one million subscribers by 2014” and “6+ million” were unsourced. The figure now on the page is the one YouTube itself reported on the access date.
• Founding and departure narrative for Game Grumps. The page said Jafari co-founded the channel in 2012 and “departed in 2013 to focus on his own content.” What the record supports is that he appeared on the channel from its first week and that his run ended around 25 June 2013. Neither a co-founder credit nor a stated reason for his departure could be sourced.
• The characterization of his own statement. The page said he acknowledged that “some of his statements were poorly worded and that the debate format led to positions he did not fully hold.” The contemporaneous reporting located says he described the comments as misconstrued, and that he later said on a podcast that he could have phrased things better. The page now says only that.
• The entire “Digital Political Impact” section. Five bullet points and a “Broader Significance” paragraph asserted that the episode “demonstrated”, “became an early high-profile example of”, “highlighted”, “illustrated” and “raised questions about” various things, and that it “preceded a broader wave” of similar incidents and shaped “evolving norms”. None of this was attributed to anyone, and no source located makes these claims. Interpretation of that kind is not the project’s to assert.
• “Rebuilding his audience”. The claim that his subscriber count fell and then recovered is not supported by any figure this pass could retrieve; YouTube publishes only a current count.
