Joseph Maligno

Joseph Maligno is a New York political figure who, according to POLITICO, previously identified himself as general counsel of the New York State Young Republicans. He left a job in the New York State Unified Court System in October 2025 after POLITICO published messages he wrote in a private Telegram chat.

Young Republicans Role

POLITICO reported that Maligno had previously identified himself as the general counsel for the New York State Young Republicans. He was among the participants in a Telegram group called the “RESTOREYR WAR ROOM,” which POLITICO described as chronicling a campaign by roughly a dozen millennial and Gen Z Republicans to take control of the Young Republican National Federation. That campaign was unsuccessful: Hayden Padgett, who led the rival Grow YR slate, defeated the group’s candidate Peter Giunta and was reelected federation chairman in the summer of 2025.

2025 Telegram Leak

On 14 October 2025, POLITICO published an account of roughly 2,900 pages of messages from the chat, exchanged between early January and mid-August. Two messages are attributed to Maligno by name in the report. Responding to a thread joking about gas chambers, he wrote, “Can we fix the showers? Gas chambers don’t fit the Hitler aesthetic.” In an exchange in which another participant referred to Chinese railroad labourers, he wrote, “Let his people go! Keep the ch—ks, though,” using a racial slur that POLITICO rendered with dashes. POLITICO reported that Maligno did not return its requests for comment.

Departure From the Court System

In a follow-up published the same day, POLITICO reported that a courts spokesperson confirmed Maligno was no longer an employee of the New York State Unified Court System. Above the Law reported that the position he had held was associate court attorney to Judge Mary A. Kavanagh, who was elected to the New York City Civil Court for Richmond County — Staten Island — in November 2022.

What Is Not Established Here

The claim that he became involved with the Young Republicans “while working in New York’s court system” asserts an order of events no source establishes. The assertion that “Republican officials denounced the rhetoric” was removed from this page as a claim about others rather than about Maligno.
