Matt Christman

Matt Christman is a co-founder and co-host of Chapo Trap House, a political comedy podcast whose first episode was published on 14 March 2016. He is also the sole author of ¡No Pasarán! Matt Christman’s Spanish Civil War, a history published through the show’s own store in 2024.

Early Life

In a 2019 interview with CounterPunch, Christman described growing up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a town whose factories were closing during his childhood, in what he called “basically an apolitical family”: his father was a Republican who listened to talk radio, and his mother “never really expressed politics one way or another.” His father died during his junior year of high school.

In the following school year Christman developed back pain and then leg weakness, and was eventually taken to Milwaukee, where doctors found a lesion on his spinal cord that proved to be an abscess. He described a month of intravenous antibiotics, surgery, a month of inpatient rehabilitation and a further four to five months learning to stand and walk again, ending with Brown-Séquard syndrome and a permanent limp. He connected that experience to his politics in the same interview: it gave him, he said, “this hyper-awareness of the happenstance of distribution of resources and abilities.”

He told the same interviewer that after leaving Wisconsin he followed his wife’s work and struggled to find anything other than temporary employment, and that he had been an active member of the Democratic Socialists of America, helping to found a chapter in Cincinnati.

Chapo Trap House

The show’s first episode, “THA SAGA BEGINS (3/12/16)”, was published to its public feed on 14 March 2016. Its own episode notes name the three hosts by their Twitter handles: “Felix Biederman (@ByYourLogic), Matt Christman (@Cushbomb), and Will Menaker (@willmenaker)”. From 16 August 2016 he also co-hosted a recurring film series, “Frost/Christman”, with Amber A’Lee Frost, later a co-host of the main show.

The show launched a Patreon campaign on 23 May 2016 and has been funded by listener subscriptions since. As of 1 September 2026 that page described the show as “News, culture and comedy commentary from Will Menaker, Felix Biederman, Matt Christman, Amber Frost & Chris Wade”, and listed 33,742 members on its paid $5-per-month tier alongside 29,775 on a free tier.

In August 2018, Touchstone published The Chapo Guide to Revolution: A Manifesto Against Logic, Facts, and Reason, credited to Chapo Trap House and to Biederman, Christman, Brendan James and Menaker. The Library of Congress name authority record created for Christman that year transcribes the book’s author note: “Matt Christman is a humorist and raconteur with lifelong love of broadcasting and political comedy.”

Long-Form History Series

Much of Christman’s work for the show has taken the form of scripted or conversational history series rather than news commentary:

• “Time For My Stories”, with Biederman, on Stitcher Premium (trailer February 2021)
• “Hell of Presidents”, with producer Chris Wade, a series on every US president, announced in June 2021 and launched on Stitcher Premium on 2 July 2021
• “Hinge Points”, with Daniel Bessner of the American Prestige podcast, a series of historical counterfactuals, first episode November 2021, subsequent episodes for Patreon subscribers
• “Hell on Earth: The Thirty Years War and the Violent Birth of Capitalism”, with Wade, first episode January 2023
• A Spanish Civil War series whose first three parts were released in November 2023, February 2024 and July 2024

That last strand became a book. ¡No Pasarán! Matt Christman’s Spanish Civil War went on sale through the show’s store from 1 October 2024; the store describes it as “the first book by Matt Christman as a solo author”, just under 200 pages, illustrated by Julia Gfrörer, edited by Meagan Day and produced by Wade, with proceeds going “to Matt & his family”. A second printing and an ebook edition were listed in December 2025.

On Political Speech Online

Christman has described the incentives of the medium he works in critically and self-implicatingly. Asked in 2019 about political conversation taking place on corporate platforms, he said that “not only is it a corporate, commodified thing, but you end up commodifying the interactions,” and that “the conversation isn’t the goal, the goal is self-promotion, and we all are turning ourselves into brands on this platform.” He added: “I feel bad condemning it because of how hypocritical that is, coming from someone who benefited from it more than most.”

He was similarly direct about the risk of an audience substituting listening for politics: “Our initial episode, when no one listened to us, we were talking about the danger of people substituting consumption for politics.”

What Is Not Established Here

This page previously stated that Christman “suffered a medical emergency” in February 2023 that left him unable to work. No source that could be fetched and read supports that date or that description, and the section has been removed. What the record does show is that the show published a post and audio item titled “Reason Why The Show Is Late” on 22 September 2023, teased only as “An important announcement about the show”, and that no episode appeared in the public feed between 19 September and 3 October 2023. The contents of that announcement could not be read: Patreon returns HTTP 403 to automated requests for post pages, its public API returns no body text for the post, and web.archive.org returned HTTP 503 to every request throughout this audit. Third-party accounts describing a stroke were found but none met this project’s sourcing standard, so no diagnosis is stated here. Christman was still listed as a host on the show’s Patreon page in September 2026, published a book in 2024, and was referred to in the show’s own notes in May 2025.

Also removed: the birth year 1981, which the Library of Congress name authority record does not carry and no fetched source supports; the claim that he “shaped online political podcast culture”; the assertion that the book “debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list”, which could not be verified against the list itself; the description of “Cushvlog” as a body of YouTube streams running from 2020 to 2022, and YouTube as one of his platforms, for want of a first-party record of the streams’ platform, dates or length — the show’s Patreon does carry a March 2025 post titled “Official CushVlog Transcription Project for Matt’s Second Book”, but its body was not readable; the characterization of him as contributing to a “dirtbag left” media ecosystem; and the “Digital Political Impact” list, whose claims about his influence on subscriber-funded political media, on Patreon’s growth, and on long-form streaming as a format were assertions of causation with no source behind them.
