Sam Hyde

Sam Hyde is an American comedian and online video maker, and a founding member of the sketch comedy troupe Million Dollar Extreme. He co-created and starred in the Adult Swim series “Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace,” which ran for one season in 2016. Separately, his name and photographs have been used repeatedly since 2015 in hoaxes falsely naming him as the perpetrator of mass shootings and other violent events.

Million Dollar Extreme

Million Dollar Extreme is a sketch troupe that Deadline described in 2016 as Massachusetts-based and known for public pranks and online videos; NBC News described it the following year as a Rhode Island group. Its subscription service, MDE.TV, describes itself as the home for all Million Dollar Extreme content “from troupe Sam Hyde, Nick Rochefort, and Charls Carroll.”

An early episode that drew press attention was Hyde’s appearance at Drexel University’s third TEDx symposium in Philadelphia on Saturday 5 October 2013. He was billed as a “video documentary filmmaker and journalist from Brooklyn” who had recently returned from Mogadishu, and was introduced by the event’s organizer, Dhairya Pujara, to deliver a talk titled “2070 Paradigm Shift.” Neither the credentials nor the talk were genuine. Hyde, then 28, took the stage in a crimson sweatsuit and a gold breastplate and delivered a discursive monologue. Asked about it afterwards by Philadelphia Magazine, he said he had done it because “I don’t think TED talks are cool. I don’t want it to sound too sanctimonious, but I think [TED talks are] really self-congratulatory.”

World Peace on Adult Swim

Adult Swim announced a pilot order for a Million Dollar Extreme series in May 2015. On 3 March 2016 Deadline reported that the network had ordered it to series under the title “Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace” — a fifteen-minute live-action show starring Hyde, Nick Rochefort and Charls Carroll, directed by Andy Ruse, set in a post-apocalyptic near future and going into production that month. The network’s own promotional copy said the show would “unlock your closeted bigoted imagination, toss your inherent racism into the burning trash and cleanse your intolerant spirit with pure unapologetic American funny_com.”

A six-episode first season aired over the summer of 2016. In early December 2016 Adult Swim confirmed the cancellation to the trade press without issuing a formal statement; that season was the show’s entire run. CBS News reported that the show had drawn criticism over sketches and promotional material, including a sketch featuring Hyde in blackface, that the comedian Brett Gelman cited the show in ending his professional relationship with the network, and that BuzzFeed had reported internal pressure at the network to cut ties. The evaluative labels used in contemporaneous coverage are those publications’ characterizations, not this page’s.

Misidentification Hoaxes

Since 2015, internet hoaxers have circulated Hyde’s name and photographs — including an image of him holding a rifle — as the identity of the perpetrator of mass shootings and other violent events. PolitiFact, which has fact-checked several variants, records the pattern as dating to that year and recurring after subsequent attacks. The claims are false in every instance: Hyde is the subject of the hoax, not a participant in the events.

The most consequential instance reached national television. On Sunday 5 November 2017, hours after the church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) twice named Sam Hyde as the shooter during a CNN interview. The actual shooter was Devin Kelley. Gonzalez’s press secretary, Aryn Fields, said afterwards that a television producer waiting with the congressman before the interview had told him reports named the shooter as Sam Hyde, that the name had not come from his staff, and that Gonzalez did not follow internet memes and was unaware the name was a recurring hoax. NBC News reported at the time that images of Hyde had already circulated after attacks in Orlando, Kalamazoo and London, and that the same rifle photograph was also being passed off under a fabricated second identity.

In March 2023, after the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, social media posts named the shooter as “Samantha Hyde,” a variation on the same meme; police identified the shooter as Audrey Elizabeth Hale. PolitiFact rated the claim “Pants on Fire” and noted that it had separately debunked claims tying Hyde’s name or image to the “Ghost of Kyiv” fighter pilot in 2022, the 2020 Beirut port explosion, and the Chinese surveillance balloon over the United States in 2023.

Later Work

Hyde co-hosts the podcast Perfect Guy Life with Nick Rochefort. The show’s own feed describes it as based in Providence, Rhode Island, covering comedy, film, pop culture, conspiracy theories, automotive topics and business, with guests including Shane Gillis, Luis J. Gomez, Dan Soder and Ryan Long. It is distributed through a public RSS feed, which carried an episode dated 11 May 2026, and in fuller form through the subscription service MDE.TV, which the feed promotes directly.

The associated YouTube channel, which describes itself as the one and only official Million Dollar Extreme clips channel and directs viewers to MDE.TV, carried 588,000 subscribers as displayed on 1 September 2026. It also hosts the Scuffed Realtor livestream, broadcast on Tuesdays at 7 PM ET.

What Is Not Established Here

The previous version of this page gave a birth year of 1987. No record supports it, and the contemporaneous source contradicts it: Philadelphia Magazine reported Hyde as 28 years old on 6 October 2013, which places his birth in 1984 or 1985. The Library of Congress name authority file returns no entry for this Sam Hyde — the three “Samuel Hyde” records it holds are seventeenth- and nineteenth-century figures. Rather than substitute one unsourced year for another, the birthYear field has been removed.

Two facts that appear widely online are deliberately absent. First, no source located in this pass establishes a founding year for Million Dollar Extreme, so none is given. Second, the two contemporaneous outlets disagree on where the troupe is based — Deadline says Massachusetts, NBC News says Rhode Island — so neither is asserted as fact; both attributions are given as such.

Characterizations of Hyde’s politics that appear in the cited coverage, including those NBC News attributes to a December 2016 Hollywood Reporter interview, are not restated here. That interview was not retrieved and read during this pass, and this project does not adopt political labels in its own voice.

On the misidentification hoaxes, this page states only what fact-checkers and news reports establish: that the claims were made, that they were false, and in the Sutherland Springs case how a sitting member of Congress came to repeat one on air. Nothing here should be read as connecting Hyde to any of the events his name was attached to. Claims that he has been questioned by law enforcement as a result of the hoaxes trace only to his own video statements and to meme documentation sites, and are not repeated as fact.
