Biography
Steve Huffman, who posts on Reddit as u/spez, co-founded Reddit in 2005 and has served as its Chief Executive Officer and President since July 2015. After Reddit’s March 2024 initial public offering he holds, through his own shares and voting agreements with other large holders, control of a majority of the company’s voting power.
Career
Reddit’s registration statement gives Huffman’s age as 40 as of 31 December 2023 and records a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Virginia. He co-founded Reddit and held a variety of leadership roles there from June 2005 to October 2009. From June 2010 to October 2015 he was co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Hipmunk, an online travel company. He returned to Reddit as Chief Executive Officer, President and a member of the board of directors in July 2015, and signed the company’s annual report as principal executive officer on 5 February 2026.
Outside Reddit, he has served on the boards of the cybersecurity firm Bishop Fox since July 2019 and of GameChanger Charity, a 501(c)(3) organization, since December 2020, and served on the board of Vy Global Growth, a blank-check company, from September 2020 to September 2022.
Reddit’s Corporate History and Huffman’s Control
Reddit began operations in 2005, was acquired by Condé Nast Publications in 2006, and did not operate as an independent private company again until it was spun out of Condé Nast’s parent, Advance Magazine Publishers Inc., in 2011. Advance remained the company’s principal stockholder through the IPO.
Reddit listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RDDT on 21 March 2024 at an initial offering price of $34.00 per share. The company has three classes of common stock: Class A carries one vote per share, Class B ten votes, and Class C none. Immediately after the offering, Class B holders held approximately 97.1% of total voting power, and directors and executive officers and their affiliates approximately 46.7%. Huffman’s own holdings represented about 3.3% of total voting power; counting shares subject to voting proxies granted to him, about 46.3%.
Those proxies come from voting agreements Huffman entered into at the IPO with Advance and with Tencent Cloud Europe B.V. and Jojoba Investment Limited, which entitle him to vote those stockholders’ shares at his sole discretion on matters submitted to a stockholder vote, subject to exceptions. Reddit estimated that as of 31 December 2025 those agreements entitled Huffman to vote shares representing approximately 75% of the voting power of its outstanding Class A and Class B common stock — a concentration that makes Reddit eligible to be treated as a “controlled company” under NYSE rules and therefore exempt from certain board-independence requirements. A separate Governance Agreement dated 19 March 2024 among Reddit, Huffman and Advance gives Advance the right to designate two directors and one non-voting board observer, and requires the consent of both Advance and Huffman, for as long as he remains chief executive, to elect the chairperson of the board.
Reddit’s annual report names Huffman individually as a key-person risk, describing him as “critical to the management of our company and instrumental in the development of our technology and our strategic direction.”
Editing Other Users’ Comments, 2016
On 30 November 2016 Huffman posted to r/announcements under the title “TIFU by editing some comments and creating an unnecessary controversy.” In it he acknowledged that he had altered comments other users had written. He described the episode as “my attempt to troll the trolls last week,” wrote that he “honestly thought I might find some common ground with that community by meeting them on their level,” that “it did not go as planned,” and that he “restored the original comments after less than an hour, and explained what I did.”
He apologised “for compromising the trust you all have in Reddit,” said the incident “instigated harassment of our moderators,” and committed that “I will never risk your trust like this again, and we are updating our internal controls to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.” He described the context as a community formed in support of then-President-elect Donald Trump that had “organized and grew rapidly, but within it were users that devoted themselves to antagonising the broader Reddit community,” and said that allowing that community “openly harass me felt hypocritical” given Reddit’s public position on harassment.
The same post announced enforcement measures: Reddit had identified “hundreds of the most toxic users” and was taking action “ranging from warnings to timeouts to permanent bans,” and posts stickied on r/the_donald would no longer appear in the r/all listing. Huffman said he had resisted calls to ban the community outright.
The episode is a documented case of a platform chief executive with database access modifying user-authored content, and of the platform’s own account of it. Huffman’s post is the primary record; this page does not rely on secondary coverage of it.
The 2020 Content Policy Rewrite
On 29 June 2020 Huffman posted a rewritten content policy to r/announcements. He wrote that the new Rule 1 “explicitly states that communities and users that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned,” and that Rule 2 combined prior prohibited-behavior rules with an expectation of posting “with authentic, personal interest.” Alongside the policy change, Reddit banned about 2,000 subreddits, “the vast majority of which are inactive”; about 200 of them had more than ten daily users.
Two of the banned communities were named in the post: r/The_Donald and r/ChapoTrapHouse. Reddit’s stated reason in the first case was that the community “has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average,” had “antagonized us and other communities,” and that “its mods have refused to meet our most basic expectations” despite warnings, moderator changes and quarantining. In the second, that it “consistently host[s] rule-breaking content and their mods have demonstrated no intention of reining in their community.” Huffman wrote: “To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit—but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception.”
The 2023 Data API Changes
On 18 April 2023 Reddit announced a consolidation of its developer terms and renamed its public API the Data API, framing the change as building a “more sustainable, healthy ecosystem around data on Reddit” and as an obligation of stewardship over what it called one of the largest corpora of human-to-human conversation online. The pricing that followed prompted a coordinated protest in June 2023 in which thousands of subreddits went private.
On 15 June 2023, during the protest, the company published a statement of its position: that supporting third-party apps carried infrastructure and opportunity costs, that Reddit could “no longer subsidize commercial entities that require large-scale data use from our API,” and that enterprise pricing was set at usage levels comparable to its own costs. It said more than 98% of apps would continue to use the Data API free of charge so long as they were unmonetized and below a published usage threshold, and that access remained free for moderator tools and bots and for non-commercial researchers and academics. The same statement reported 100,000+ active communities, over 57 million daily active uniques, over 50,000 daily active moderators, and — as of the update of 30 June 2023 — more than 96% of the top 5,000 communities by daily users being open.
The episode is the clearest documented instance of the structural tension on Reddit between a company that owns the platform and an unpaid volunteer moderator corps that runs it. This site’s timeline covers the protest itself as a separate event.
Scale
For the three months ended 31 December 2025, Reddit reported an average of 121.4 million daily active uniques worldwide. Revenue for 2025 was 1.3 billion in 2024.
Compensation
Reddit’s Summary Compensation Table reports total 2023 compensation for Huffman of 341,346 in salary, 93,776,049 in option awards, 7,375 in other compensation. The stock and option figures are grant-date fair values of awards made in the run-up to the IPO, not realized cash. His reported total for 2022 was 200,000 salary.
What Is Not Established Here
The page previously stated that Huffman co-founded Reddit “with Alexis Ohanian.” Reddit’s own registration statement identifies Huffman as “our co-founder” without naming the others, so the co-founder’s name is not asserted here from a source this audit read; no page for Ohanian exists in this collection.
The circumstances of Huffman’s July 2015 return as chief executive are not described here. Reddit’s registration statement establishes the date and the role but says nothing about the surrounding events, and no first-party Reddit announcement from 2015 was retrievable: reddit.com refuses automated clients on every route tried, and the relevant Wayback captures could not be located within this pass.
The 2016 and 2020 sections rest entirely on Huffman’s own posts, read from raw Wayback captures. Where those posts characterise a community’s conduct, this page attributes the characterisation to Reddit rather than adopting it. No independent assessment of whether Reddit’s stated reasons were accurate is offered, because none was verified.
Also not asserted: any exact birth date (the registration statement gives only an age as of a fiscal year end); any characterization of Huffman’s own political views; follower, karma or subscriber counts; any dollar figure for the 2023 API pricing, which neither Reddit announcement states; and any claim about what specific words Huffman substituted when he edited comments in 2016, which his post does not itself set out.
