Tom Woods

Tom Woods — Thomas E. Woods, Jr. — is an American historian and author who hosts the near-daily podcast The Tom Woods Show and is a senior fellow of the Mises Institute. The Library of Congress name authority file records him as “Woods, Thomas E., Jr., 1972-”, with recorded occupations of author, journalist and podcaster and recorded fields of activity in economics and the Austrian school of economics.

Books

Woods’s published work spans American constitutional history, Catholic history and Austrian economics. Catalogue records establish: The Church Confronts Modernity (Columbia University Press, 2004); The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History (Regnery, 2004); How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization (Regnery, 2005); The Church and the Market (Lexington Books, 2005); 33 Questions About American History You’re Not Supposed to Ask (Crown Forum, 2007); Who Killed the Constitution?, with Kevin R. C. Gutzman (Crown Forum, 2008); Meltdown (Regnery, 2009); Nullification (Regnery, 2010); Rollback (Regnery, 2011); and Diary of a Psychosis (The Libertarian Institute, 2023). The Library of Congress separately records his editorship of The Political Writings of Rufus Choate (2002) and his authorship of Real Dissent (2014).

Both his own site and the Mises Institute put the total at thirteen books. Woods states that Ron Paul wrote the foreword to Meltdown, that The Church and the Market won the $50,000 first prize in the Templeton Enterprise Awards, and that he edited a collection of Murray Rothbard’s writing, The Betrayal of the American Right.

The Tom Woods Show

The show’s own RSS feed, retrieved on 1 September 2026, runs to Ep. 2791, released 29 August 2026. The 750 episodes the feed retains cover 14 January 2022 to 29 August 2026, a rate of roughly one episode per weekday. An Internet Archive capture of the same feed from April 2015 reaches back to episodes dated September 2013, so the programme was already running on that cadence more than a decade earlier; the capture does not reach episode 1, and this page therefore does not assert a launch date.

The feed classifies the show under News/Politics and Government, and the Mises Institute describes it as “a libertarian podcast with thousands of episodes.” Over the 750 episodes in the current feed the most frequent named guests are Scott Horton (19 episodes), Dave Smith (12) and Ron Paul (9).

From October 2015 to June 2020, Woods also co-hosted Contra Krugman with the economist Robert P. Murphy — 225 weekly episodes premised, in the show’s own words, on “teach[ing] economics by refuting Paul Krugman’s New York Times column.”

Libertarian Party politics

Woods’s podcast is one of the venues in which the Libertarian Party Mises Caucus was discussed as it took over the party’s national leadership. Episode 2137, released 3 June 2022 under the title “Libertarians Take Control of Libertarian Party,” hosted Michael Heise of the Libertarian Party Mises Caucus to discuss, in the show notes’ phrasing, “the clean sweep his libertarian caucus made at the recent Libertarian National Convention.” Woods returned to Libertarian Party affairs in later episodes, including coverage of the 2024 convention.

Other activity

Woods states on his own site that he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard and a master’s, M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Columbia; that he served for eleven years as associate editor of The Latin Mass magazine and is a contributing editor of The American Conservative; and that he created 400 history and government videos for the Ron Paul Curriculum, a K-12 homeschool curriculum. He writes for the Mises Institute’s own outlets, with recent pieces including “The Public Health Bureaucracy: Enemy of the Public, Enemy of Health” (June 2025) and “Austrian Economics in the Age of MAGA” (October 2025).

Both his own site and the Mises Institute state that he received the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award in Vienna in 2019; the Institute attributes it jointly to the Hayek Institute and the Austrian Economics Center. The Austrian Economics Center’s own site returned no record of the award to search, so the claim is reported here as his and his institution’s, not as independently confirmed.

The affiliation is confirmed and made specific (senior fellow); “lecturer” was dropped as a role because no source consulted describes a teaching post, and no employment date range is asserted anywhere on the page.

Not established, and therefore absent: a launch date for The Tom Woods Show, because the earliest archived capture of the feed does not reach episode 1; any audience, download or subscriber figure, because no first-party measurement is published; the New York Times bestseller status the show’s own feed copy claims for him, which was not checked against the Times’s lists; the Hayek award, which rests only on his own and the Mises Institute’s statements after the awarding body’s site returned nothing; and his birthplace, which the Library of Congress record itself sources to Wikipedia.
