This page covers the digital organizing operation built for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential
campaign. Obama for America registered as the principal campaign committee on January 16, 2007,
which is the founded date recorded here.
The correction this page exists to make
The 2008 operation is routinely described as having invented data-driven digital campaigning. It did not, and Kreiss’s study is the detailed account of what actually happened.
The staff, the software and the organizing practices came from earlier work — principally Howard Dean’s 2004 campaign and the organizations that formed around it after that campaign ended. People carried specific tools and specific methods forward. What 2008 did was apply an existing and already-tested apparatus at presidential scale, with a candidate whose campaign could fund it.
That is a real achievement and a different one from invention. The previous version of this page described the coalition as having “pioneered data-driven digital organizing, social media campaigning, and online grassroots fundraising in presidential politics”; that description has been replaced, because the best scholarly source on the subject contradicts it.
What is not stated here
No fundraising figures appear on this page. The FEC holds them, but the shared demonstration API key
used during this pass hit its rate limit before the 2008-cycle totals could be retrieved, and no
figure is stated that was not verified. This is a straightforward gap to fill and is recorded as
such in reports/citations/movements.md.
Status
Recorded as transformed. The committee’s later filings show only residual activity; the operation
dispersed into subsequent campaigns and into a consulting industry, which is the sense in which it
continued.

The standard scholarly account, and the source for this page's central correction: the 2008 digital operation was assembled from staff, tools and practices developed in the 2004 Dean campaign and the organizations that followed it, rather than invented in 2007. Metadata confirmed against the Crossref record for the DOI.

Federal Election Commission. Obama for America, FEC committee C00431445. Principal campaign committee, first filing January 16, 2007. Committee identity and registration date retrieved through the FEC open-data API; the linked public page renders client-side. Per-cycle receipt totals for the 2008 cycle were not retrieved during this pass — the API's shared demonstration key hit its rate limit — and no fundraising figure is therefore stated on this page.
