Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a volunteer-written encyclopedia launched in 2001 and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2003. The Foundation describes itself as “the nonprofit responsible for hosting and protecting Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects,” and credits “nearly 250,000 volunteers around the world” with creating and maintaining the content.

Reported scale

The Foundation publishes pageview data through a public API rather than a user count. Across all Wikimedia projects, that endpoint records 26.2 billion pageviews in July 2026, up from 24.2 billion in May. These are pageviews across all projects and all access methods, not visits to English Wikipedia and not unique readers — a distinction worth keeping, since the figure is often quoted without it.

Governance model

Three features distinguish Wikipedia from the other platforms in this collection, and all three are matters of published policy rather than inference:

• Neutral point of view. Wikipedia requires that content represent, fairly and proportionately, the significant views published in reliable sources on a topic, rather than adjudicating between them. It is one of three core content policies, alongside verifiability and no original research, and is designated non-negotiable.
• Verifiability through citation. Claims are expected to rest on cited reliable sources, which makes the encyclopedia a pointer to sources rather than an original authority — the reason this project treats Wikipedia as a lead to follow rather than a citation in itself.
• Public revision history. Every edit, and every discussion on an article’s talk page, is publicly logged and attributable. Disputes and attempts at manipulation are visible in the record, which is not true of ranking or moderation decisions on commercial platforms.

Relevance to political information

Wikipedia is nonprofit, carries no advertising, and does not rank content for engagement, so the incentives that shape feeds elsewhere do not apply. Its political significance lies less in distribution than in being a widely used common reference — and in the fact that contests over politically sensitive articles happen in the open, in edit histories and talk pages, where they can be examined after the fact.
